Top Don'ts

  • Use tap water to store, clean or rinse your lenses or case
  • Use the contact lenses for longer than you should
  • Ignore problems such as dryness, redness, vision problems or discomfort with your lenses
  • Reuse the solutions of saline in your contact lens case

Using your contact lenses

  • First, wash and dry your hands – good hygiene prevents infections.
  • Open the foil (for daily disposables) or case lid (for reusable lenses), and take the lens out using your index finger.
  • Check the contact lens is the right way up – it should be a bowl shape. If it has a lip around the edge, it means it’s inside out.
  • Before you place it on your eye, hold it up and check for any tears or debris.
  • If there is any debris then use some fresh solution to clean it by rubbing it gently with your thumb, but if it’s damaged you’ll have to throw it away.
  • The easiest way to insert your lens is to place it on the tip of your index finger and with your free hand, pull the top eyelid up to stop you from blinking and closing your eye.
  • Pull your bottom eyelid down and bring the lens towards the centre of your eye. Without any pressure, the lens will settle into place by itself.
  • Once the lens is on, move your eyes from side to side and then close them both. You can gently press onto your eyelid to get rid of any air bubbles trapped under the lens to get it feeling comfortable.

You’re great at putting them in, but what about taking them out again?

  • Make sure your hands are nice and clean! Wash and dry them before you begin.
  • Look straight into the mirror, tilt your head down slightly and pull your upper and lower eyelid down.
  • Using your finger, move the lens down and across onto the white of your eye and then gently pinch it out once it’s by the eyelid.
